There's plenty of Oscar buzz around Daniel Day-Lewis' slimy oilman in this dark portrayal of one mans obsessive greed. I think the characters had many layers. I have no clue why you felt they were one dimensional. The film also closed many of it's holes but for a 3 hour long film, it's a lot to sort through. I suggest you do before making such claims. This film was a caricature of an oilman and fundamentalist. acting was excellent; the characters were one- dimensional/shallow. the script had too many undeveloped ideas and left me not having any sympathy for the characters. this film script had so much potential, what a waste of fine actors...
